It’s an iconic franchise and I'm excited about the reboot. It is set to showcase some of my favourite Gladiator challenges from the original series as well as throw up a few new ones for us to fall in love with!

Liz Ellis, Host of Gladiators for Network 10

History of the Gladiators

Originally airing for 3 seasons between 1995 and 1996 on the Seven Network, each episode saw 4 Contenders compete against the show's Gladiators in various Events, such as Duel, Hang Tough and Powerball, to reach the series grand finale. The show was presented by Kimberley Joseph throughout its original run, alongside Aaron Pedersen and Mike Hammond. Tony Schibeci provided commentary, while John Alexander refereed the events in the first series, and Mike Whitney thereafter. John Forsythe served as assistant referee.

The show enjoyed a brief revival in 2008 on the Seven Network and was presented by Tom Williams and Zoe Naylor. Bill Harrigan was one of the two referees for the show, the other was John Forsythe, who was a referee on the original Gladiators series.

Gladiators has also enjoyed various spin-offs, in countries such as the UK, USA, Finland, Sweden and South Africa. Australia also competed in various international special episodes such as International Gladiators, The Ashes (against the UK Gladiators) and Australia vs Russia.
